How to Download an APK on Android
Learn the checks to make before downloading an APK file on your Android device.
Start with the source
Before saving a file, identify who publishes the app and which distribution channel that publisher uses. Google recommends obtaining Android apps from Google Play and explains that downloads from unknown sources can put your device and personal information at risk. Check the file before downloading
- Find the exact app name and publisher, rather than choosing by icon alone.
- Compare the published version, APK size and supported Android version.
- Inspect the destination of the download link. Avoid unrelated pages and unsolicited file-sharing messages.
- Confirm you have enough free space and a stable connection.
- Start the download only after you understand its source.
Wait for the complete download
Use your browser’s download list or the device download manager to check progress. An interrupted file may not be installable. Do not rename another file type to APK to force it through the installer.
Find the saved file
On many devices, completed downloads appear in a Downloads location in the file manager. Labels vary by manufacturer and Android version. Verify that the file corresponds to the source and release you intended to obtain.
Review before installation
